Chicago Bears 2020 NFL Draft: Top 10 tight end targets
By Ryan Heckman
6. Albert Okwuegbunam, Missouri
The wild card of this year’s tight end class is without a doubt Albert Okwuegbunam out of Missouri. All he did at the Combine was run the 40-yard dash before having to take the rest of the weekend off with a minor injury, but he ran it in a blazing 4.49 seconds.
Many outlets call him a developmental guy, but he’s 6-foot-5 and has above average strength for a tight end with his kind of speed. He’s impressive in terms of his athleticism, but Okwuegbunam needs to fine-tune the rest of his game. Route-running, initial get-off on the line of scrimmage and technique as a blocker — those are his big keys to becoming a great pro. If he can do that, he has the physical traits to be excellent.
5. Harrison Bryant, Florida Atlantic
Talk about a name who could go just about anywhere in the top four rounds at this point. Harrison Bryant was recently mocked in the first round by NFL.com’s Peter Schrager, but most have him with a Round 3 or Round 4 grade. He is a late riser, though, and it wouldn’t shock me to see him go in the second.
Here’s the deal with Bryant: He’s good, but not great, in terms of his overall athletic ability. I’m talking speed, agility and jump. Everything he does in terms of his athletic attributes is good across the board, just not elite.
But, Bryant is so phenomenal with his technique. His IQ is out of this world. He blocks with intent and physicality. He runs his routes smoothly. He operates as what you would call a security blanket. If you need him to do something, and count on it, Bryant is your man. He’s quick enough. He’s strong enough. But, above all else, he’s incredibly smart and fundamental.
