Chicago Bears NFL Draft: Final QB rankings, possible trade included
By Ryan Heckman
Rounds 5-7
First of all, I don’t think there are any quarterbacks worth taking in the fifth round unless one of the previous three guys drop there. Most of the late-round quarterbacks are at their best value in the late sixth or seventh round, just so we’re clear. That said, there are some intriguing guys available whom the Bears could pick up in the late stages of the draft.
1. Tyler Huntley, Utah
2. Cole McDonald, Hawaii
3. Bryce Perkins, Virginia
4. Khalil Tate, Arizona
You’ll notice that, first of all, every one of these guys has the ability to run — some more than others. But, they are all decently mobile quarterbacks, and if you’re looking at a late-round guy, why not take someone who could be a dual-threat?
Out of all these guys, I think I like Cole McDonald the best, but I believe Tyler Huntley is the one to keep an eye on. McDonald has a cannon for an arm and can move very well. Not to mention, he can rip it on the run, too.
But, Huntley has a lot to like about him as a more NFL-ready guy, if there is such a thing this late. He is definitely more aware, in terms of feeling pressure in the pocket and not only avoiding it, but putting his head down and getting positive yardage on his own if he must.
Huntley is fairly accurate and can place the ball well enough for his receivers to have the best possible chance to catch it, but if a defense uses any disguises, he may find that tougher to diagnose. He has a learning curve, like any of the later-round guys, but Huntley offers you a little bit of both arm talent and mobility, coupled with being a pretty smart kid.
