Chicago Bears: 5 prospects to avoid at 50th overall
By Usayd Koshul
5. DE Julian Okwara, Notre Dame
Another edge rusher, Julian Okwara is intriguing because he’s got 15.5 sacks over the last three years while at Notre Dame. It’s clear that from a statistical standpoint, the production is there which is why he’s so interesting.
While the main goal of an edge rusher should be to rush the passer, what the Bears need to do is plan for life after Robert Quinn as well. Quinn will be 30 years old by the time the 2020 season begins and while he signed a five-year deal, the Bears could always move on from him sooner than most think.
One issue with Okwara is his inability to show up in the running game and stop opposing running backs. Too often, he is unable to set the edge himself meaning that he’s the kind that will be taken advantage of easily.
Overall, Okwara has a few things to like but he also needs to work on a lot. He also doesn’t have a go-to rushing move that he’s going to use as soon as the ball is snapped on each play to beat offensive lineman. While he’ll be a second-round pick there are other edge rushers such as Bradlee Anae that could be the pure pass rusher the Bears are looking for.
