Chicago Bears: 5 tight ends to replace Trey Burton
By Ryan Heckman
Now that the Chicago Bears are parting with tight end Trey Burton, they could look at one of these strong options to replace him.
Friday night, the Chicago Bears made a notable move. To most, it was shocking. The team decided to cut ties with veteran tight end Trey Burton after just two seasons with the team.
Why was it shocking? Well, when healthy, Burton is more than serviceable. Cutting him saves the Bears just under $3 million if they designate him as a post-June 1st cut, which is a decent amount of money, yet the team still ends up with dead cap even next season.
Burton had a groin injury about a year and a half ago which has seemingly lingered on and on, and since then, he has not been able to get fully healthy.
In his first season with the Bears, Burton caught 54 passes for 569 yards and six scores. Last year, though, he failed to reach even 100 receiving yards on the season.
The Bears still have nine tight ends on the roster, but none worth banking on for the future. Veteran Jimmy Graham slots in as the starter for now, but that could change in the near future. I think there is something to be said for the Bears cutting a guy like Burton just days before the 2020 NFL Draft.
General manager Ryan Pace could fill his shoes in one of a few ways, and there are some intriguing names out there whom may become available. Let’s look at five strong options to replace Burton, starting with a player recently placed on the trade block.
