Chicago Bears NFL Draft: 3 mistakes Pace can’t make
Neglecting the Quarterback Position
When Ryan Pace was hired by the Bears he talked about the need to draft a quarterback every year. Since those comments, he has drafted one — Mitchell David Trubisky. And as the two quarterbacks he passed up — Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes continue their meteoric rise — Trubisky has left much to be desired.
The lack of production out of Mitch led the team to trade more draft capital for Nick Foles to compete for the starting job. Foles’ contract is loaded with incentives and the ability for him to opt-out after this season. In other words, if he plays well, he may be looking to land another lucrative contract.
On the flip-side of the QB-coin, there is Mitch. It seems unlikely the team will pick up his fifth-year option, and each day the offseason is delayed due to COVID-19, the more unlikely it becomes. So the Bears could find themselves without a viable quarterback on the roster in 2021. That is unless, of course, they invest in one this year as a developmental option.
Trading back with one or both of their second-round picks, as mentioned above, will enable them to recoup another mid-round pick which could be used to select a player like Anthony Gordon, who we’ve highlighted extensively and even interviewed a couple of months ago.
Regardless of who it is, they must add to the quarterback room this year and must continue to do so every year until they get it right.
