As the 2020 NFL Draft approaches, there are a few mistakes Chicago Bears’ general manager Ryan Pace must avoid.

The 2020 NFL Draft is fast approaching and the Chicago Bears are making their final preparations for what will be an entirely remote experience. While every draft is replete with landmines or opportunities for missteps, there are certain axioms, for lack of a better word, to which general manager Ryan Pace must adhere.

To be sure, Pace will have a lot on his mind during the three days of the draft and the week leading up to it. In the “new normal” dictated by the COVID-19 outbreak, teams must worry about things like network security, and contingency plans for losing power, or what to do if they learn their Zoom calls have been hacked.

All of these new concerns are in addition to those traditional worries that keep GMs up at night. ‘Do I trust my evaluation?’ ‘Am I giving too much or too little weight to this player’s red flags?’ ‘Does that one scout pounding the table for a player no one else seems to like know something I don’t?’

Of course, this is why the general managers get paid the big bucks. Well, that and putting together a roster that can compete for a Super Bowl each year and have sustained success.

To that end, there should be a checklist of sorts that Pace keeps in his pocket to remind him of the things he absolutely cannot do in this draft. Put another way, the things he has done in previous drafts that have gotten him in trouble. So here are three mistakes Pace must avoid in this upcoming draft.
