Chicago Cubs: Three college pitchers to target in 2020 Draft
By Ryan Sikes
Tanner Burns, Auburn
Originally drafted by the New York Yankees in the 37th round of the 2017 MLB Draft, Tanner Burns chose collegiate baseball. He’s been part of Auburn’s rotation since his freshman year, posting a 3.01 ERA in 17 starts. He struck out 77 batters in 86.2 innings but also walked 37.
Burns is on the shorter end for starting pitchers, standing at 6-foot even and weighing 215 pounds. Between his freshman and sophomore years, he spent the summer playing in the Cape Cod League, perfecting his mechanics.
The time was well spent as Burns posted a remarkable year and one that put him on the map as a potential first-round pick. He made 16 appearances – including 15 starts – and struck out 101 batters in 79.2 innings. Burns posted a 2.82 ERA and allowed a .218 average.
He was off to a promising start this year before everything was shut down, spinning a 2.42 ERA while striking out 32 batters in 22.1 innings. Burns was Auburn’s Friday night starter, typically reserved for the team’s best starter.
In regards to his pitch arsenal, Baseball America indicates that Burns already has four developed pitches. His fastball consistently sits in the mid-90s and complements it with an above-average curveball, changeup, and newly developed slider.
