Chicago Bears 2020 NFL Draft: 6th Round defensive gems
By Ryan Heckman
4. Cornerback Nevelle Clarke, Central Florida
One of the positions I want to see the Bears continue adding depth at is cornerback. After letting Prince Amukamara go (and for good reason) the Bears have to find their next starter. Obviously, they have a few guys there right now who will compete: Tre Roberson, Kevin Toliver and Artie Burns.
But, taking a player like Nevelle Clarke out of UCF in the sixth round would help breed an even fiercer competition at that spot. The 6-foot-1 prospect has ideal outside size for the NFL and he also has a nose for the football.
Over his last two seasons at Central Florida, Clarke has 24 passes defended and four picks. His long arms certainly help him in this area, and it’s arguably his best trait. He goes for the football.
The area he could work on the most has to be his agility overall. Whether it’s his footwork, hip movement or speed in general, Clarke has to get better. His length won’t always be enough for him to play in the NFL, and pro receivers will beat him across the middle via slant routes all day long if he doesn’t get quicker at switching directions.
His frame, length and ball skills are plenty good enough to warrant a sixth-round pick. From there, I’d leave it in the hands of Chuck Pagano to help develop him further.
