Chicago Bears 2020 NFL Draft: 6th Round defensive gems
By Ryan Heckman
With two picks in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears might end up finding one of these gems to add to their already vaunted defense.
Much has been made about the Chicago Bears having to add some talent on offense in the 2020 NFL Draft. General manager Ryan Pace knows he has a couple of areas which stand out as a pressing need on that side of the ball, including the offensive line, wide receiver, tight end and running back.
Finding a starting-caliber guard in the draft should be a priority, but adding another receiver, complimentary running back and potentially the tight end of the future are all atop the list of priorities. Yet, if the Bears come across some defensive guys they like, they have to take them.
Chicago still has some depth to build on defense. While it isn’t as imperative as some needs on offense, the Bears do indeed have holes on defense — they’re minor needs by comparison, but still needs, nonetheless.
The Bears could use more competition at cornerback, depth at inside linebacker, another safety and maybe one more defensive lineman who could play in the middle. It sounds like a lot, but for the most part, we’re splitting hairs here.
A defense featuring Akiem Hicks, Eddie Goldman, Khalil Mack, Danny Trevathan, Roquan Smith, Robert Quinn, Eddie Jackson and Kyle Fuller should be looked at as arguably the top unit in all of football. But, as they say, sometimes the rich get richer. In this instance, the Bears could become even richer — but by finding late-round gems.
Pace has two picks in the sixth round to work with this year, and sure, he might trade up. But, more than likely, they will make at least one pick in this round. There are some very likable prospects who are currently mocked in this area, so why don’t we look at just a handful.
