Chicago Bears 2020 NFL Draft: 7th Round quarterback options
By Ryan Heckman
6. Jake Luton, Oregon State
We’ll end this list with the 6-foot-6 Jake Luton out of Oregon State, who is coming off his strongest year yet. In 2019, Luton completed 62 percent of his passes for 2,714 yards, 28 touchdowns and just three interceptions.
There are things about Luton that Bears fans would like when placing him on the current roster. He’s obviously got a tall frame and able to see more of the field than most quarterbacks. Luton played in a pro-style offense at Oregon State, which helps his potential to stick on a pro team.
The best thing one could say about Luton is that he can make a lot of the throws you want from an NFL quarterback, but he’s also careful with the ball. Just look at the ratio from his 2019 campaign — three interceptions while throwing 28 touchdowns. That’s flat-out impressive, no matter what program you’re coming from. The main issue with Luton is that he has absolutely zero threat as a runner. In fact, he’s not really a threat to escape pressure, either.
If Luton can become just somewhat mobile as a pro, that would help his cause tremendously. Aside from mobility, pocket presence is the most noticeable issue. Not every collegiate quarterback is going to come with the full package, but Luton would be so much closer if he was able to navigate the pocket better and continue through his progressions.
Being able to move around and avoid pressure while still navigating his way through each target would thrust Luton into a mid-round guy, without a doubt.
