Chicago Bears 2020 NFL Draft: 7th Round quarterback options
By Ryan Heckman
2. Cole McDonald, Hawaii
It seems almost every Bears fan out there has entertained the idea of Cole McDonald in the navy and orange. Like Washington State’s Anthony Gordon, it took McDonald to gain a little bit of steam in terms of draft stock, and in both cases, our own Patrick Sheldon was on board long before the majority.
Now, Gordon is much more NFL-ready than McDonald, so don’t twist those words around. McDonald certainly has a lot to work on, and like a lot of the guys on this list, decision-making is up there towards the top of things needing improvement.
Watching McDonald on film, there are two things that jump off the screen right away. First of all is the mobility — it’s obvious. At the Combine, McDonald ran a 4.58 in his 40-yard dash. He’s an athlete, too, boasting a 36-inch vertical jump and a 121-inch broad jump. McDonald can run. Unlike the aforementioned Montez, McDonald knows how to use his legs to make plays.
Second, McDonald has a cannon for an arm. This seems ridiculous, but the combination of arm strength and mobility remind some people of Patrick Mahomes. Now, the odds of McDonald ever throwing 50 touchdowns in a season are slim to none, of course. Mahomes is his own beast. But, the skillset is intriguingly similar.
Overall, McDonald has to work on honing in on a lot of little things. Knowing when to release the football and where to place it in the pros is going to be key for him to keep a spot on an NFL roster. But, out of all of these guys, McDonald’s attributes are the most exciting.
