Chicago Bears 7-Round Mock Draft: A perfect trade back scenario
By Ryan Heckman
Round 5, Pick 164: Offensive Tackle Alex Taylor, South Carolina State
With how the offensive line appeared to crumble last year, it’s no wonder the Bears are looking to add competition. Now, a lot of people would love to see competition added with earlier picks. But, this has been a mock where I’ve selected the best players available.
Finally in Round 5, the Bears grab offensive tackle Alex Taylor out of South Carolina. He’s a good candidate to come in and stick on the roster, but more importantly, push Charles Leno and Bobby Massie over the summer.
I know the Combine is not everything, but can we just sit and marvel at the fact that this man, at 6-foot-8, ran a 5.09 seconds in his 40-yard dash? That is absolutely incredible for a guy his size. That’s real speed on the offensive line.
Taylor is obviously quick and has those long arms and legs, so one of the areas he will have to improve is with functional strength. Adding some more muscle to that 308-pound frame will be key. He’s great at the point of attack and getting off the line of scrimmage, but keeping his blocks and locking them in is an area of concern.
