Chicago Bears 7-Round Mock Draft: A perfect trade back scenario
By Ryan Heckman
Round 5, Pick 149: Running Back Anthony McFarland, Maryland
On film, you might wonder how Anthony McFarland would fall all the way to the fifth round. But, that’s about where he’s projected at the moment. He could go anywhere in the middle rounds.
If the Bears landed him, they should be thrilled and could plug him in immediately as a compliment to David Montgomery. McFarland is bigger than Tarik Cohen, but a little smaller than Montgomery. His size is kind of that perfect fit for a third down back. He’s 5-foot-8 weighing 208 pounds.
McFarland ran his 40-yard dash in 4.44 seconds at the Combine, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. In terms of game speed, he is as explosive as they come. If you give him even a little daylight, McFarland will take it to the house. He’s also built strong and avoids tackles well.
The biggest reason he will fall to the middle or later rounds is simply lack of production overall — not to say he hasn’t produced, but he hasn’t been a bell cow. In two seasons with Maryland, he’s carried it 245 times for 1,648 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground. He also only caught 24 passes, but that’s not because he cannot catch.
In Nagy’s system, he could be used in a variety of ways other than just a change-of-pace kind of guy. He’s experienced in jet sweeps and can indeed catch the football.
