Catcher: Geovany Soto

Career Numbers with Chicago Cubs: 555 games, .252/.342/.445, 77 home runs, 264 RBI, 106 wRC+, 13.6 fWAR

This wasn’t the easiest choice to make. The Chicago Cubs have many solid catcher choices in this era. However, in the end, Geovany Soto stood out as the best choice. Soto burst onto the scene with the Cubs in 2008, hitting .285/ .364/ .504 on the year, winning the National League Rookie of the Year award and starting for the National League in the All-Star Game.

Soto never had another year like 2008 (although 2010 was not far off), but he was a consistent presence in the lineup throughout his time in Chicago and was a solid defensive catcher behind the plate. Soto’s incredible 2008 season puts him over the top at the catcher position here.

Honorable Mention: Willson Contreras

Willson Contreras is a ridiculously talented catcher who is still coming into his own as a complete baseball player. Contreras has fantastic raw power as a hitter and is tremendously athletic behind the plate. His framing skills behind the plate leave plenty to be desired, but Contreras has a ridiculous throwing arm is extremely quick. If we put together this team at this time next year, Contreras could easily be the starting catcher.

Other Players of Note: Michael Barrett, Miguel Montero, David Ross and Welington Castillo
