Chicago Bears NFL Draft: Potential 5th Round steals
By Ryan Heckman
2. Quarterback Anthony Gordon, Washington State
In case you haven’t been following our content since, oh, October, most of us really like Anthony Gordon. Our own Patrick Sheldon was the first to get the bandwagon going, and this kid very well could be the ideal quarterback for the Bears’ future.
Chicago Bears
Should Matt Nagy decide he wants to keep three quarterbacks on the roster, drafting Gordon in the fifth would be a dream scenario. At the moment, he is still being projected as a mid-round pick. Personally, I think he should be taken in the fourth round — higher in the fourth, honestly.
But, if he is sitting there in the fifth round, there’s no denying he should be the pick. Gordon can sling it with the best of them. His footwork is tremendous in the pocket, and contrary to what people might say, he is capable of moving outside the pocket and throwing on the run.
Last year, Gordon shattered records as he threw for 5,579 yards — a PAC-12 best. 48 touchdowns and 16 interceptions later in 2019, and he definitely put himself on the map.
He only has 14 career college starts, so Gordon will need some polishing. A year on the bench learning how to better read coverages and use his eyes more cautiously would do him wonders. He has a beautiful throwing motion and it rolls off his fingertips with ease. One area he’s lightyears ahead of compared to Mitchell Trubisky? Going through progressions.
Gordon is smart, coachable and seems to know his areas needing improvement. I like him a lot as a mid-round pick, and hopefully the Bears do too.
