Chicago Bears 7-Round Mock Draft: Let’s get wild, trade up
By Ryan Heckman
Round 4, Pick 117: Tight End Adam Trautman, Dayton
Another trade? Another trade. This time, they do a couple of things in the process. First, they deal Tarik Cohen and commit to both David Montgomery as the primary back and Cordarrelle Patterson getting a few carries here and there — along with adding another back later on.
How do the Bears move back up? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have wanted to add a veteran pass-catching running back since landing Tom Brady, so Cohen is a perfect option for them. As for the trade, it’s essentially Cohen for a 4th, plus a 6th round pick swap.
Now, on to the pick. Adam Trautman would be a welcome target for the Bears’ quarterbacks. He’s a 6-foot-5 former basketball player whose skills on the court translate heavily over to the football field.
Trautman has a knack for being able to go up and make the difficult, contested catches. He’s great securing the football in traffic, and although he isn’t the fastest guy on the field, he can accelerate well and get extra yards after the catch.
Chicago Bears
When everyone wants to focus on the fastest guys in the draft, at times, Trautman brings the Bears everything they truly need. Chicago needs a tight end with sure hands who can become a real red zone threat while also able to catch passes in crucial situations. That’s who Trautman is.
With the Bears adding Jimmy Graham to a room including Trey Burton, Demetrius Harris and a few others, Trautman would come in and immediately become the guy they’d depend on for the future. Plus, being mentored by a player like Graham, who was once the best in the business, would be a great way to begin his career.
