Chicago Bulls: Ranking every 1st round pick from 2010s
By Ryan Heckman
1. Guard/Forward Jimmy Butler, Marquette (2011)
Jimmy Butler became a Bull as a quiet, humble, hard-working kid out of Marquette. It was hard to see what he could really become, judging strictly based on his rookie year. Tom Thibodeau hardly played rookies, so Butler mostly sat on the bench.
As time went on, though, it became apparent that Butler was going to be a special defensive player. Before you knew it, he was actually one of the better two-way players in all of basketball. Then, he began to change a little — or maybe, this is how he always was, and it just started to surface.
Butler seemed to grow quite an ego after a little while, and ultimately he was traded to Minnesota. Whether or not he needed to say it publicly. Butler wanted out. And he got what he wanted.
Soon, everyone realized that Butler was not only a great player, but a diva, too. His infamous televised interview on ESPN which saw him throw ex-teammates under the bus was when everything truly boiled over.
Once again, Butler was traded — this time, to the Philadelphia 76ers. Fast forward to present time, and he’s now with the Miami Heat. Hopefully, he’s found a permanent home, because he really is a phenomenal player.
Whether you love him or hate him, Butler is by far and away the best player the Bulls have drafted in the first round, in the last decade. He is still one of the top five two-way players in the league, being able to put up 20 or more each night while locking down the opposing team’s best wing.
