Chicago Blackhawks: Analyzing every No. 1 pick since Patrick Kane
The Colorado Avalanche did very well when they won the 2013 NHL Draft Lottery. They selected Nathan MacKinnon with the first overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft and watched him develop before their very eyes. He didn’t light the world on fire in his first few seasons like some other first overall picks but boy did he develop.
MacKinnon’s point totals in his first four seasons were 63, 38, 52, and 53. Those are mostly decent totals but for the first overall pick, they were a little bit underwhelming. Then it all clicked for him. He has since then put together three seasons of 90+ points. He probably would have soared past 100 this year before the NHL was forced to pause the season. MacKinnon is now one of the best players in the NHL.
By being drafted by a team in the same division as the Hawks, you knew they were going to get a fair share of his time. In 31 games against Chicago, MacKinnon has 11 goals and 18 assists for 29 points. A lot of those points have come in recent seasons as he became a superstar. He will be over a point per game against every team in no time. The Blackhawks are going to have no fun trying to contain MacKinnon for the next decade or more.
