Chicago Bears: 5 strong NFL Draft prospects team has met with
By Ryan Heckman
EDGE Curtis Weaver, Boise State
One other area the Bears have been busy at this offseason is at edge rusher. It started cutting ties with Leonard Floyd, who ultimately signed with the Los Angeles Rams. Chicago then brought in another former Ram, Robert Quinn, most recently of the Dallas Cowboys, to take his place.
Add in re-signing Isaiah Irving and taking a flier on former first-round pick Barkevious Mingo, and this year’s outside linebacker group looks much different than it did a year ago. While Irving and Mingo might just be reserves, the Bears could look to add one more into the mix of the competition.
Per DraftWire, the Bears have also met with Boise State’s Curtis Weaver. He could be their guy in a middle round, if they were to have a shot at him. Weaver is 6-foot-2, weighing 265 pounds and could function both as an end or edge rusher, depending on how Chuck Pagano wants to deploy him.
At Boise State, Weaver enjoyed three strong years overall. He was consistent. Just as any prospect would love to have it, his last year was his best — 19.5 tackles for loss including 13.5 sacks. Weaver also finished with a trio of passes defended.
One thing that stands out about his game is the variety of techniques Weaver uses. He can get around an offensive lineman in multiple ways, and just seems to have a nose for getting to the ball behind the line of scrimmage at any cost.
Edge isn’t exactly a huge position of need at the moment, but adding Weaver could make for a dynamic group of pass rushers. The Bears would be even more feared with a player like him as their third or fourth on the depth chart.
