Chicago Bears NFL Draft: Don’t ignore these late-round prospects
By Ryan Heckman
Quarterback Khalil Tate, Arizona
He is no more than a seventh-round flier, but with his unique rushing ability, it’s impossible to ignore Arizona’s Khalil Tate.
Let’s get this out of the way quickly: Interceptions are an issue. He has to work on his decision-making. This is one of the biggest reasons Tate will be either a late pick or an undrafted free agent pickup. He is far from developed and needs some work as a passer.
But, being able to use him in a Taysom Hill type role is something I have to wonder about. There were whispers of whether or not Tate would switch to wide receiver, but after spending this offseason working with former pro Donovan McNabb, I think it’s pretty clear that Tate wants to be a quarterback.
Maybe his path to being an NFL quarterback is in a role similar to what Hill has brought the New Orleans Saints as of late. The Bears have a coach who is smart enough to use weapons like that — at least we would hope.
Over four seasons and playing in 40 games, Tate threw for over 6,300 yards, 57 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. He also added 2,285 yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground. That includes a ridiculous 2017 campaign where Tate rushed for 1,411 yards.
Tate is a far cry from a starting NFL quarterback, but his path to a role in the NFL is certainly there. Would the Bears give him a chance?
