Chicago Bulls NBA Draft: These prospects needed March Madness
By Ryan Heckman
Guard Tyrese Maxey, Kentucky
We don’t need to go into any more detail about how this is a relatively weak class, but what I will say is, this is an extremely guard-heavy draft. For a team wanting to bolster their back court, they will have quite a few more options than they would if they wanted a front court player.
In a season which saw plenty of surprises, one of the constants which remained was in Kentucky. The Wildcats were still one of the best teams in the country, and like any year, had the capability to go on a run come tournament time.
One guy who could have set his name in stone during the tournament is Tyrese Maxey. A 6-foot-3 guard, Maxey has it figured out on both ends. He isn’t just a one-dimensional player. Maxey knows how to create his own offense, a lot like a couple of guards the Bulls already have. But, at the same time, he possesses a sound defensive presence as well.
Because there are several guards who could go in the lottery, Maxey would have loved the chance to stabilize himself as a top-5 pick, or at least top-7. I still believe he will go within the top 10 picks, for sure. But, for a team like the Bulls who need to finally stabilize the guard room, Maxey putting on a show in March may have given Chicago more reason to look at him.
