Drafting Kirby Dach 3rd Overall

Let’s make one thing clear, Kirby Dach has a really high ceiling and has the potential to be very good. The best comparison for him is Ryan Getzlaf of the Anaheim Ducks. Getzlaf is probably going to the Hall of Fame as he has had an incredible career. If Dach ends up being 80 percent of Getzlaf, the Hawks will be thrilled. He is going to be a very good player. In 2019-20 he has eight goals and 15 assists for 23 points in 64 games played. He played well enough for Chicago to keep him beyond the nine games and not send him back to the Saskatoon Blades for the year.

With that said, he is still not the preferred selection from the 2019 NHL Draft. He was the most NHL ready player available to Chicago but he was not the one with the most potential to make the biggest impact. Stan Bowman let Bowen Byram fall to the division rival Colorado Avalanche at the fourth overall pick. He now will get to run the show with Cale Makar who might be the 2020 Calder Trophy winner.

Letting a number one defenseman go like that might end up being a franchise-altering mistake. If he goes onto be the next Duncan Keith or Drew Doughty, it will haunt the Hawks for years. It makes it worse that he will be playing in this already strong Central Division. Stan wanted the NHL ready player to try and save his job and perhaps it worked, but Bown Byram is going to be such a stud.
