The White Sox end Chicago’s baseball championship drought

When the Cubs won the World Series in 2016, they were ending a 108-year drought for themselves. They did not, however, end a Chicago baseball championship drought of significance in doing so. That is because the Chicago White Sox did that eleven years prior. They ended an 88-year drought of their own when they won the World Series in 2005.

That is one of the best moments in Chicago sports history let alone one from the 1990s. It was extra significant because the White Sox won all but one game during that playoff season. They swept the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox in the division round, they beat the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in five games, and then swept the Houston Astros in the World Series.

The run that the White Sox went on that year was something that might never happen again. That team was destined to win the World Series the second that the postseason began. It was one of the most dominant postseason runs in the history of baseball. Players like Paul Konerko, A.J. Pierzynski, Jermaine Dye, and Mark Buehrle became Chicago legends during the process along with manager Ozzie Guillen. It was a remarkable run for this team in a year that didn’t really project to see them there at the beginning.
