Chicago Bears Mock Draft: No need for free agent QB
By Ryan Heckman
Round 6, Pick 196
With the Bears releasing Amukamara, they are left with an issue trying to find a starter opposite of Kyle Fuller. Will Chuck Pagano give Kevin Toliver a real shot? Could Duke Shelley improve enough and offer potential as an outside corner?
Perhaps it’s the top CFL free agent, Tre Roberson, who comes in and secures the job opposite of Fuller. After all, he signed the richest CFL-to-NFL deal since Cameron Wake. Regardless, the Bears need some more competition at this position in 2020. Ideally, training camp is going to be a battle between a handful of corners.
In the sixth round, the Bears could take a shot on a guy like Nevelle Clarke out of UCF. The senior cornerback offers great size on the outside at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds. Clarke’s biggest strength is his ball skills. Over his last two seasons, Clarke produced 24 passes defensed and four picks.
He is definitely a project due to his lack of shiftiness. Lance Zierlein of NFL.com calls his hips “tight” and sees an issue with pro receivers beating him on slants across the middle. Under a coach like Pagano, maybe Clarke improves enough to become a quality backup in Chicago.
