Why make the move?

Most would be asking the question, and I completely understand it. Engram reminds us all a lot of a current Bears tight end, Trey Burton. Heck, I wrote recently why I wouldn’t sign Hunter Henry to a free agent deal because of his injury history as well.

Burton has struggled with his health since becoming a Bear, but should supposedly be healthy and ready for the 2020 season. This is good news, but adding more talent here is still a necessity.

Speaking of talent, that’s just what Engram is. He’s incredibly talented. The guy can line up anywhere, which is what head coach Matt Nagy loves in his tight ends. Burton was used in similar fashion back in 2018, lining up in the back field, the slot and even out wide on occasion.

Engram can do all of that, but he’s lethal in the slot. He’s so comfortable at that spot and wreaks havoc on linebackers there. Whatever the Bears decide to do at quarterback doesn’t matter. A healthy Engram would make him better, If that’s Mitchell Trubisky, great. If it’s someone else, Engram still elevates their game.

If he doesn’t pan out in terms of health, then the Bears move on next year and, sure, could end up wasting a pick. But, this roster is so close to winning a championship. Pace has to take his shots now, or risk never getting over the hump.
