Trade No. 1

The Giants would likely dangle Engram out there to a team like the New England Patriots. Let’s admit it: That would be a total Bill Belichick move, especially if they end up holding onto Tom Brady.

I could definitely see New England making a move for Engram, and New York asking for something along the lines of a second rounder. But, that is a steep price to pay for a tight end coming off a season where he appeared in just eight games. Maybe the Bears make a similar offer if there are no takers on solely a second-round pick.

In this instance, the Bears do end up trading a second rounder in exchange for Engram. But, like Pace manages to do sometimes, he lands a pick in return — later on in the fifth round. An extra pick is an extra pick, and the Bears can’t afford to be down a selection in this year’s draft. It might be in the fifth round, but Pace has found some gems in those middle rounds.

A second-round pick is a huge price, sure. But, Engram could be well-worth the investment.

Let’s not forget that Engram is still on his rookie deal. This is what makes a potential trade extra enticing. This season, Engram only counts as a $3.4 million cap hit. Next year, the Bears could choose to pick up his fifth year option if 2020 worked out well, or they could extend him on a multi-year contract if the confidence was high enough in Engram’s stock.
