Chicago Bears: How to take a shot and trade for Jimmy Garoppolo
By Ryan Heckman
What happens next?
Let’s say the Bears landed Garoppolo. What happens next? Do the areas of need change much?
In short, not really.
If Trubisky is traded, then the Bears still have the need for a backup. If Trubisky stays, then we are in for some fun summer months.
There is no way Matt Nagy doesn’t crown Garoppolo the starter from Day 1, right?
Right?
I have a hard time believing Garoppolo isn’t handed the starting job right away. At that point, of course, the words we heard from both Pace and Nagy at the Combine become mute. They may have had confidence in Trubisky as their starter, but things change in a hurry. We call that a smokescreen.
With Garoppolo in the fold, Chicago still badly needs a guard, safety and tight end — just as they would with Trubisky. But, in a weird way, the pressure might be off a bit for Pace. He would have pulled off a much-needed move in order to get a solidified starter at the most important position in football. From thereon out, they don’t face any real question marks regarding the quarterback.
The remainder of the offseason becomes a joy for most fans. We would get to see how Pace fills the rest of the holes, without having to argue about whether or not Trubisky was the future of the franchise.
