Chicago Bears Free Agency: 4 players that require caution
By Ryan Heckman
1. Safety Tony Jefferson
The Bears will have a hole at strong safety this offseason, assuming they move Eddie Jackson back to free safety and let Ha Ha Clinton-Dix hit the open market. The Baltimore Ravens recently released veteran safety Tony Jefferson, who could be a perfect fit in this Bears defense.
Jefferson is still just 28 years old and could play both strong safety and a little bit of nickel if need be. He is the type of box safety you want in Chicago. Jefferson is someone who consistently floods to the football. He’s totaled a strong number of tackles over the years. Over a five-year span, he’s had at least 74 tackles, and three seasons with at least six tackles for loss.
Last year, though, Jefferson suffered a torn ACL after appearing in just five games. The Ravens released Jefferson in order to save some money, as well as the fact that safety Chuck Clark was given a three-year deal to stick with Baltimore.
Obviously, the Bears need to be careful with a player coming off a torn ACL. But, more importantly, gauging his market is a must. If Pace gets the feeling Jefferson’s market value is doable, then he should take his shot. It all depends on how other teams view his monetary worth at this point, especially after coming off a major injury.
