Chicago Bears News: 4 free agent running backs who fit
By Ryan Heckman
2. Matt Breida
Although he is a restricted free agent, Matt Breida will be an intriguing name to watch. The San Francisco 49ers appear to be a team which can run the ball no matter who is in their back field.
Between the playbook and offensive mind of head coach Kyle Shanahan and a rock solid offensive line, the Niners were able to stack up the rushing yards no matter who was taking the handoffs.
Breida has shown he is more than capable when given the chance, but he’s also had some injuries along the way. Actually, most of the Niners’ backs have, which makes it more astounding that their ground game just continued to surge.
His price tag is the big question mark. It is tougher and tougher for free agent running backs to get paid, which is why Breida wouldn’t necessarily be out of the realm of possibilities for the Bears.
When healthy, Breida can both run and catch the football. That’s what Matt Nagy is looking for. He likes a diverse set of skills coming out of the back field. Last year with San Francisco, Breida totaled 743 yards from scrimmage and a pair of touchdowns.
