Chicago Bears News: 4 free agent running backs who fit
By Ryan Heckman
The Chicago Bears should add another capable running back this offseason, and may do so in free agency.
The next couple of months will be very interesting. The running back position could look much different for the Chicago Bears in 2020.
Last year, fans thought the team was set with three strong backs, but it wasn’t until the offensive line imploded that made us all question what the real problem was.
Rookie David Montgomery certainly looked the part when given opportunities. He was by far the best of the group, and I would feel confident in him going forward.
The Mike Davis experiment didn’t go over too well as the Bears trotted him out as their starter in Week 1, but he failed to impress. Chicago decided to recoup a fourth-round compensatory pick by releasing him before he could finish his first year with the team.
Then, there is the curious case of Tarik Cohen. As a rookie, Cohen was electrifying and broke tackles better than most backs whom are, for the majority, bigger than he is. Yet, Cohen is indecisive now and seems to dance more than he does drive forward.
So, do the Bears try and deal Cohen? Or, do they keep him as primarily a return man? Maybe he turns things around and proves to be a lethal offensive weapon once again.
Either way, the Bears should look to find a better complimentary back for Montgomery. If they do so in the draft, they could wait until much later on. But, free agency holds a few guys which would fit the offense nicely. Let’s look at four of them in particular.
