Running Back Todd Gurley, Los Angeles Rams

A little over a year ago, if you had told me the Los Angeles Rams would be second-guessing their future with running back Todd Gurley, I would have questions. But, here we are.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has said the Rams will meet with Gurley to go over options regarding his future with the team. Why?

There are two reasons the Rams would like to part with him, and they’re pretty significant.

First of all, the Rams still owe Gurley over $14 million per season through 2023. Sure, he’s only going to be 26 years old by the time the 2020 season starts. But, a 26-year-old running back with knee concerns? That’s another story.

And that’s the other reason.

Gurley has struggled with an arthritic knee over the last season and a half, and it has caused Sean McVay to often limit Gurley’s touches. At times, Gurley has been saved more for the second half of games when his production is needed the most.

That isn’t the kind of thing you want to see from a young running back — being shelved until needed. Not to mention, Gurley was once the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year just a short time ago.

Let’s say we were talking about the Bears getting in on the trade talks. They would likely have to offer the Rams a second-round pick, maybe even their no. 43 overall. We’ve already discussed the fact that the team traded up to get Montgomery last year, and they believe in his variety of talents.

It is definitely intriguing thinking about Gurley in a Bears uniform. I won’t pretend that simply entertaining the idea isn’t at least a little exciting. But, considering the money involved and the questions regarding his health, I just don’t see it happening.

Verdict: No deal

No matter what happens this offseason, Ryan Pace’s future may very well be dependent upon which deal he does or does not make. If he decides to pull the trigger on a trade, let’s hope it’s in the right scenario.
