Chicago Bears Rumors: Analyzing 3 big name trade targets
By Ryan Heckman
Running Back Le’Veon Bell, New York Jets
The Le’Veon Bell situation has become a hilarious catastrophe in New York. Last year, former general manager Mike Maccagnan signed Bell to a 4-year deal worth over $52 million. For those counting at home, that’s over $13 million per season for a running back who sat out the entire 2018 season after a dispute with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Head coach Adam Gase has told specific sources that he did not want Bell on the Jets from the get-go. Yet, the team signed him anyway. Then, in May of 2019, Maccagnan was fired.
Yeah, that’s an interesting turn of events.
While Bell is still one of the better all-around backs in the league, the Bears already have a similar guy in second-year pro David Montgomery. Now, I am not saying Montgomery is as good as Bell was or is at the moment. However, they have similar skillsets.
Chicago traded up to get Montgomery last year, even with limited draft capital. They liked his ability to catch the football, show smart vision and break tackles. Bell has been great at all three of those throughout his career.
But, he will be 28 years old in just a couple of days and still has three years left on his pricey contract. His name is a big one, and it’s a crazy, fun thought to picture him in a Bears uniform. However, with the money involved, the Bears can’t make this happen.
