Chicago Bears: Matthew Stafford trade packages, plus the aftermath
By Ryan Heckman
Trade Package No. 1
This upcoming season, outside linebacker Leonard Floyd will be playing under his fifth-year option while making over $13 million. For a guy who hasn’t lived up to his draft status as a first-round pick back in 2016, Floyd is definitely a candidate to be cut before he has the chance to play out his contract year.
The Lions could use some help off the edge, so throwing his name out there in a potential trade would make sense for Chicago. Who knows, maybe the Lions get a motivated Floyd, who could be in line for a big contract next year if he stands out in 2020. This works well for Detroit, too, because they don’t have to pay Floyd on a multi-year deal as a free agent.
In any deal, it’s hard to believe that general manager Ryan Pace won’t try and recoup draft capital. This year, it will be especially hard to part with a draft pick, considering the team doesn’t have picks in the first or third rounds.
Trading Floyd and a second rounder in exchange for Stafford and a fifth rounder seems enticing enough for Detroit’s end, and definitely a risk for Chicago. But, getting a pick back in return is a huge win. Not to mention, the Bears get something in return for Floyd, rather than simply cutting ties with him altogether.
