Chicago Bears Free Agency: 5 players team must re-sign
By Ryan Heckman
Inside Linebacker Danny Trevathan
I would argue Danny Trevathan is the most important player the Bears need to re-sign. I understand there are concerns with injuries, but realistically, those concerns should make it easier for the Bears to bring him back on an affordable deal. Other teams may not want to pay for a linebacker who will be 30 years old when this season starts, after seeing him come off injured reserve last season.
To be fair to Trevathan, he did suit up for all 16 games over the 2018 season and played lights out. In fact, he’s one of the better inside backers in football when healthy. He’s highly versatile, being able to drop back in coverage, stop the run, as well as blitz on occasion.
If Chicago is able to keep Trevathan on a reasonable deal (maybe $5 million per year annual average) while re-signing Pierre-Louis, I would consider that a win. Kwiatkoski may actually end up the most expensive linebacker out of the group, since he was been a healthy, productive backup for a couple of years.
Trevathan seems to love Chicago. I would be willing to bet he, his agent and Pace get something done in order to keep him in the navy and orange. If they can hold onto Trevathan, along with these other four guys, they’re in for a successful free agency period.
