Chicago Bears Free Agency: 5 players team must re-sign
By Ryan Heckman
Tight End J.P. Holtz
This is one of the positions fans love to talk about lately, because it was one of the most severe pain points on the Bears’ roster in 2019. The tight end group was about as pitiful as you could possibly get last year, with no one single player amassing 100 receiving yards all season long.
One guy who caught my attention late in the year, though, was former Washington Redskins tight end J.P. Holtz. After being cut by the Redskins early in the year, the Bears scooped him up and he proved to be a valuable pickup late in the year.
The primetime game against the Dallas Cowboys on December 5th was where you saw Holtz come alive the most, when he finished with three catches for 56 yards.
On a few of his catches last year, he showed an ability to not go down easily, which was impressive. It is a little funny speaking so highly of a guy who was virtually an unknown coming into last season, but I truly believe he should be back in the tight end room next year.
The Bears have a tight end, in Holtz, who can catch the ball and get downfield after the catch. That’s a luxury for a quarterback — especially one like Mitchell Trubisky who needs a lot of help around him to succeed.
Bringing back Holtz on a cheap deal to be the team’s third or fourth tight end would be a major victory.
