Chicago Bears Free Agency: 4 bargain cornerbacks to consider
By Ryan Heckman
4. Eli Apple
I will preface this portion by saying I would much prefer the Bears use Eli Apple as their third corner, rather than to replace Amukamara.
Apple is quite the polarizing player. Depending on who you ask, some might tell you they think he’s a solid cornerback. Others might tell you the exact opposite, along with some choice words.
Last year, Apple had a 3-game stretch where he allowed 17 catches on 21 targets for 234 yards while coming up with zero pass breakups, per Pro Football Focus. He also tallied four penalties for 57 yards during that span.
Once again, some might not prefer PFF as their go-to football analysis, and I completely understand that. But, for most of his career, Apple has been graded as average in comparison to his peers.
He is just two years removed from a season where he finished with 14 passes defensed, a pair of interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
Apple certainly isn’t the worst the Bears could do, but as I said before, he would be best served as a backup to whomever starts opposite of Fuller.
