Chicago Bears Free Agency: 5 bargain tight ends to consider
By Ryan Heckman
4. Marcedes Lewis
The last two years in Green Bay have seen veteran Marcedes Lewis with his lowest totals since his rookie season back in 2006, but at this point, you’re getting a guy like him for a different purpose.
Lewis wouldn’t come in and become the starter by any means. But, he would give the Bears someone who could come in on crucial downs and do one of a few things.
First, he is still one of those big targets who is fairly sure-handed, like Clay. He’s been around a long time for a few reasons — one of those being that he’ll catch the football when targeted. It’s a smaller sample size, but in Green Bay for the last two seasons, Lewis’ catch percentage is over 78 percent. He can still get it done if called upon.
Another reason he is valuable is due to his ability to be a solid blocker. Over anything else, Lewis would be brought in to become one of the stable blockers at the position. The veteran will be 36 years old this year, but has started all 16 games over his last three seasons — that’s impressive.
If the Bears want a cheap option who can do the basics for them, along with being a veteran presence in the locker room, Lewis would be a great candidate to add. This is a man who has played in over 200 career games. That’s a lot of experience brought to the table.
