Chicago Bears Free Agency: 5 bargain tight ends to consider
By Ryan Heckman
2. Darren Fells
Speaking of bigger guys and strong red zone targets, Darren Fells is a guy who won’t be talked about enough, but the Bears should absolutely take a look at him. Fells is a 6-year veteran and will be 34 years old when the 2020 season starts. Oddly enough, that math would mean he started his pro career at the age of 27 — which he did.
Fells is a former basketball player who played professionally overseas, which is a big reason the Bears should be interested in him. He stands 6-foot-7 and is a very underrated red zone threat. Fells would give Trubisky a true red zone target at the position, which they have lacked for a while now.
Last season was a breakout year for Fells, who played with Deshaun Watson and a capable offense. He finished with 34 receptions for 341 yards and seven touchdowns.
Sure, Trubisky is no Watson, but under Matt Nagy I think Fells would certainly get his fair share of targets where they count most. The Bears would be smart to go after Fells on a cheaper deal, especially considering his age.
