Chicago Bears: Cam Newton trade packages, plus the fallout
The Fallout
The Bears would be getting a quarterback who has proven that he can play at the highest level at an elite level. The Panthers ultimately fell short in Super Bowl 50, but he got them there while having an MVP season in the process.
There are people worried about Newton’s injury and that is valid, but this is football. Guys get hurt. It isn’t like Mitchell Trubisky has been a model of health consistency either.
Adding a guy like Newton would do one of two things for Trubisky. It would either motivate him to reach his potential, which would benefit both him and the Bears, or he will lose the job completely and eventually be let loose in 2021.
This is a huge offseason for the current decision-makers at Halas Hall. If the team doesn’t improve in 2020, there will be major changes after the season.
It is less than ideal that Trubisky hasn’t yet worked out. It would have been nice to see a guy on his entry-level contract perform like an elite player. You see the benefit from that with the folks in Kansas City, but it isn’t going to work like that for Chicago. They need to do what they need to do in order to get that offense to score some more points in 2020 and Newton might just be the key.
