Chicago Bears: Cam Newton trade packages, plus the fallout
Trade Package No. 2
The Bears need to improve their offense. It might take some sort of roster player to get Carolina to trade Cam Newton to the Bears. Chicago might be willing to do that if Newton was healthy and ready to win with this team. The Bears have David Montgomery in the fold after drafting him in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
Some believe they could go after a different complimentary back for Montgomery. That makes Tarik Cohen expendable at the right price.
The Panthers would be smart to take Cohen and a sixth-round pick for Cam Newton. They have Christian McCaffrey who is an MVP caliber running back. The Panthers might want to add a back like Cohen to take some of the heat off of McCaffrey. They certainly don’t want to run him into the ground early in his career, so having another guy there to help him would be good for them.
As for the Bears, this move would be them committing to Montgomery while handing the reigns to Newton. They need a quarterback who isn’t an anchor to the offense, so paying the price of losing Cohen would be good for them. It might also eliminate the chances of Matt Nagy trying to use Cohen as a gadget more than a running back and just commit to the traditional run. Either way, improving at quarterback is essential to any trade the Bears make this offseason.
