Chicago Blackhawks: 3 Ottawa Senators to acquire via trade
The last time Ron Hainsey was traded in the middle of the season, the team that acquired him went on to win the Stanley Cup. Now, he didn’t move the needle for that 2017 Pittsburgh Penguins team loaded with stars but he did provide them with some steady depth at the position. Everyone knows the Blackhawks need help on the back end with all of their injuries and Hainsey would be a perfect fit.
Hainsey has a ten-team trade clause so if the Blackhawks are not on that list it might be tough. He might also be willing to waive it for them if they are clearly a playoff-bound team by the trade deadline. He probably really wants another chance at the Stanley Cup so he will likely be traded to someone who is in a playoff race.
He is not going to change the game offensively for any team that acquires him. He only has one goal and nine assists for ten points in 41 games played this season. He doesn’t help generate offense using his skill because that isn’t part of his game. He is, however, a +7 on a bad Senators team. Plus/minus isn’t that useful of a stat but being a plus on a bad team says a little something nice about him. If the Hawks wanted some defensive depth, they might be willing to part with a late-round draft pick for Hainsey.
It is no guarantee that Chicago makes a single trade at all this deadline. It might even be the wisest to sell or stand pat. With that said, if Stan Bowman sticks to his “win now” mentality, the Ottawa Senators clearly have a few good players that would help the Blackhawks along in that chase.
