Chicago Bears: 5 defensive free agents to cut ties with
By Ryan Heckman
4. Safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix
Clinton-Dix is an intriguing free agent, because his market might be more unpredictable than we thought. Last year, when they signed him, most thought he would be a one-year rental. This defense was too good not to elevate Clinton-Dix to a big contract in 2020.
However, because the team finished where they did, there isn’t as much talk around the defense as a whole. Thus, maybe Clinton-Dix doesn’t get paid as much as most of us originally thought he would a year ago.
Don’t get it twisted. The defense was still fantastic last year, and a lot of the problems on this team stem from the offense. Clinton-Dix actually had a great season with Chicago, and he deserves a decent contract this offseason. He stayed healthy, played in all 16 games and finished with a little bit of everything across his stat sheet. But, will other teams be willing to pay up?
We’ll see.
I know what I saw last year, and if other teams saw the same thing, the Bears won’t be able to afford him. This would turn the safety position upside down, too, like the edge rusher spot. Letting both Bush and Clinton-Dix walk would hurt, but again, the Bears don’t have a lot of money to work with.
