Chicago Bears: 5 defensive free agents to cut ties with
By Ryan Heckman
1. Outside linebacker Isaiah Irving
The edge position is one I hope Pace completely revitalizes through the draft and free agency. Let me say this: If they cut ties with Floyd, then Isaiah Irving may have to be retained. But, even then, Pace could choose to try another cheap route via free agency.
Personally, outside of Khalil Mack, I don’t mind if the Bears totally clean house at this position. They need some kind of boost opposite of Mack, and Floyd hasn’t given them consistency there. Irving has been more of a warm body over the last year than anything else.
Once upon a time, during the 2018 preseason, Irving showed some flashes. He actually had a pretty strong training camp during that offseason, thus sticking around on the roster. But, since then, Irving has looked like more of a practice squad candidate than someone you can plug and play when needed.
In three seasons with Chicago, Irving has compiled 23 total tackles, 1.0 sack, and four quarterback hits. The 25-year-old and former San Jose State standout should be allowed to hit free agency, and if need be later in the summer, he could be brought back to participate in training camp and to see what he has to prove.
