It’s been a quiet offseason for the Chicago Cubs. While fans grow frustrated with the lack of acquisitions, a team once thought to be on the cusp of a dynasty has a championship window that’s quickly closing.

It wasn’t supposed to end up like this for the Chicago Cubs. Once thought of as a team with the best young core in baseball, the Cubs now seem to be on the bubble of even contending for the playoffs.

There were whispers of a potential dynasty from fans and analysts alike after the Cubs won the World Series in 2016. The team had that young core, plus some strong veterans like pitcher Jon Lester that remained under club control for multiple years.

The team has won just one playoff series since 2016 and failed to make the postseason entirely last year. The Cubs aren’t the “Lovable losers” anymore. Their fans rightfully expect a contending team year in and year out.

It’s very likely that nobody in ownership or the front office wanted the team to be in this position just four seasons after winning a World Series. But if that’s true, they aren’t doing much to show their displeasure.

The Cubs remained quiet this winter as rival teams like the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox made big moves to improve their teams.

This upcoming season is a big question mark for the Cubs. Rumors continue to swirl about the team trading some of their biggest stars. Nothing has been done yet, but it’s not a comfortable feeling for Cubs fans.

I want to remain optimistic about this team, but there are too many red flags to ignore. Here are three reasons why the Cubs championship window is rapidly closing.
