Chicago Cubs: Small bit of Nolan Arenado trade hope alive?
By Ryan Heckman
Colorado Rockies star Nolan Arenado has voiced his displeasure with the team recently. Is there any hope still for a Chicago Cubs trade?
This offseason has been extremely quiet for the Chicago Cubs. Fans are growing tired of the same notion that the team has no more money to spend and, quite frankly, a lazy front office.
It almost seems like after the Cubs won the World Series in 2016 that the Ricketts have sat on their hands as if one title in over a century was more than good enough. Yet, the Cubs are still a professional baseball franchise that goes out and tries to do one thing each year: Win a World Series.
In order to do that, you have to spend money — period. Ricketts doesn’t understand that piece of the puzzle.
For a little while this offseason, there were rumors that the Cubs were in on the trade talks involving Colorado Rockies superstar Nolan Arenado. The All Star third baseman is entering the second year of his 8-year, $260 million deal with the club, which he signed last February.
Despite the huge contract extension, Arenado has been in the rumor mill for quite a while now. This latest report from MLB.com has a pretty powerful quote from Arenado regarding his feelings on his current club.
The comments came after general manager Jeff Bridich told The Denver Post that he fully expects the club to start this next season with Arenado “in the purple and black.” He later stated, “…so we can put this to bed.”
Now, whether or not the Cubs actually deal Kris Bryant this offseason is irrelevant — and seems equally as crazy as dealing for Arenado. The fact that Arenado is upset with the Rockies means that there is still, at least, some hope for him getting dealt.
Would he be dealt to the Cubs? Again, with the way the front office and ownership has acted, it seems farfetched. But, never say never. If Arenado were to be traded, he would have to waive his no-trade clause that’s included in his current deal. Assuming he thought he could win a ring with the Cubs, maybe he’d do that for Chicago. Hey, a fan can always dream, right?
