Chicago Bears: Defensive prospects to watch at Senior Bowl
By Usayd Koshul
5. OLB Zack Baun, Wisconsin
Zack Baun is an interesting prospect for many reasons. At first glance, when one watches him, there’s a lot that makes one wonder what he can be at the next level. However, at the same time, Baun leaves a lot to be desired.
Let’s start with the good first: Baun is an explosive athlete who’s consistently been able to thrive with a variety of pass rush moves. He’s also got a high motor which is a plus since he’s always willing to get after the ball carrier.
Now let’s get to the bad when it comes to Baun: He’s very stiff which means that he’s got no bend which then makes it hard for him to turn the corner. This is an issue because at the next level, he’ll mainly need to rely on power in order to have a chance at winning against offensive tackles.
In terms of production, the numbers for Baun are definitely there. Between 2016 and then 2018 and 2019, Baun has totaled 30.5 tackles for loss, 15 sacks, and 152 tackles. He’s been a highly productive player but whether he’ll be a starter at the next level remains to be seen.
For now, Baun should be on the board when the Bears pick in the fifth round. Unless he absolutely dominates during the Senior Bowl, it’s hard to see him having a significant rise up NFL Draft Boards. Nonetheless, he’s still an interesting prospect that could be a valuable rotational edge rusher.
