57. Scouting Report. S. J.R. Reed. player. Pick Analysis. Georgia. 5

After pick no. 50, the Bears are in for a long wait — as are the fans. Right now, many of the simulators and projections fail to include the Bears’ 4th round compensatory pick they will receive. So, we’ll leave that selection for the future mocks we’ll have up. Still, that pick will be on the tail end of the 4th round, so either way, we’re in for a bit of a wait as the Bears do not own a 3rd rounder or a standard 4th round pick.

With the 141st pick, and their first of two 5th rounders, the Bears take safety J.R. Reed out of Georgia, to go along with the hefty amount of Bulldogs they’ve selected in recent years, including Fromm, three rounds earlier.

The one minor change I think will help the Bears defense the most this offseason is by moving Eddie Jackson back to free safety. With Ha Ha Clinton-Dix likely signing elsewhere, it opens up that possibility. Jackson is much more of a ball hawk, and has a bit more freedom at his previous spot.

Reed, meanwhile, is more of a physical type guy who plays up in the box. Think of him more along the likes of the Adrian Amos playing alongside Jackson.

Reed is a sure tackler, more often than not. He isn’t going to win a lot of downfield battles in coverage, which is why the Bears would be best to play him at strong safety. In three seasons with Georgia, Reed amassed 199 tackles including 9.0 for loss (3.0 sacks), 14 pass breakups, five interceptions, three fumble recoveries and a pair of defensive touchdowns.
