Chicago Bears: 3 key things to know about John DeFilippo
By Ryan Heckman
3. DeFilippo is not alone in ties to Nick Foles
Here is an interesting connection: Both DeFilippo and new offensive coordinator Bill Lazor have coached Nick Foles. DeFilippo, of course, was influential in the Eagles’ Super Bowl year where Foles took over late in the season. Following that campaign, DeFilippo was a hot commodity in the coaching world, especially having come from a system like Doug Pederson’s.
Lazor, meanwhile, was Foles’ offensive coordinator back in 2013 under Chip Kelly. That season ended up being a historic one for Foles, as he threw 27 touchdowns and just two interceptions. Sure, Kelly was the play-caller, but Lazor had an influence.
With all of the questions surrounding the Bears’ quarterback room and what they’re going to do financially this offseason, one can’t help but wonder if these two hires signal a move for Foles.
The Bears could save a ton of money by cutting ties with Leonard Floyd, Taylor Gabriel and Prince Amukamara — essentially more than enough money to absorb Foles’ average salary of $22 million over three remaining years.
Would Foles be the future of the franchise? Of course not. Is he good enough to win with in Chicago? I would argue that he is.
Foles isn’t one who will make several mistakes and lose the game for your team. In fact, he will take chances and, many times, they will pay off. He can throw the ball down field, which is a positive. He’s also an incredible person to have in the locker room. From his experience and being known as a guy of high integrity, Foles would be more than welcome.
Would Pace make a move to get him? Only time will tell. The better question is, what is Jacksonville going to do at the quarterback position going forward? We’ll have to wait and see.
