Dynamic tight end

Josiah Deguara is such an intriguing option for the Bears for a variety of reasons. He was so productive and consistent in his last two seasons at Cincinnati. In 2018 he hauled in 28 catches, for 468 yards, and five touchdowns. Last season, he caught 39 passes, totaling 504 yards, and seven touchdowns. He was such a reliable option for their offense.

One of his biggest strengths is stretching the field vertically which fits in perfectly with what Nagy likes to do with his “U” tight end. To go along with above-average route running abilities, Deguara has great hands and can haul in off-target passes due to his very large catch radius. Want proof? Check out the first play in this highlight video at the 16-second mark.

He also brings a level of versatility that the Bears would surely take advantage of as he has the speed and route-running ability to line up in the slot, but is also physical enough to play in-line with his hand in the dirt and take on edge rushers. He is a tireless worker and puts forth tremendous effort into his blocking. As he continues to get stronger and has a chance to work with the staff on technique, it could quickly become another strength.

Speaking of his tireless work ethic, it was the play in the highlight above this season against UCLA that ultimately caught the eye of Jim Nagy and in part, helped secure his invite to this month’s Reese’s Senior Bowl. This work ethic was one of the many topics we covered when we caught up with Josiah to discuss how he is getting ready for the NFL.
