Chicago Bears: Potential free agent adds from divisional round
By Ryan Heckman
4. Anthony Sherman, Fullback, Kansas City Chiefs
Chicago has to put the running game at the top of their offseason priorities, and as I’ve said, that starts with the offensive line. Looking at a lot of the playoff teams from this year, you’ll notice they use a fullback often. The Chiefs are one of those teams, but 2019 was a little different in terms of production for their starting fullback, Anthony Sherman.
This year, Sherman wasn’t used as much in the passing or rushing game. The Chiefs were a fairly one-dimensional offense, though, with their running back situation looking worse than recent years.
Still, Sherman is a proven receiving threat out of the back field and can make his way down field after the catch. Even if for just one or two plays per game, the Bears could desperately use another wild card type of weapon on offense. This was supposed to be a role Trey Burton took on, but we know how his season went.
Above all else, the Bears should put some stock into finding a useful fullback — and no, Michael Burton was not that type of guy. Sherman is the perfect type of fullback for the Bears, and he also has a connection with Matt Nagy having played under him back in Nagy’s days with the Chiefs. Finding a guy like Sherman, if it’s not him specifically, should be a high priority.
